Total score
Total score is the running sum of every score from every play you've submitted to osu!, regardless of whether the map is ranked and including every retry. It always grows; it never resets. Total score is mostly a measure of how much osu! you've played overall — it doesn't reflect skill the way pp does, but it's a good measure of long-term commitment.
Why total score is so much larger than ranked score
Every retry, every loved-map play, every play on an unranked map adds to total score and not to ranked score. For most active players, total score is many times larger than ranked score.
