Top play
A top play is one of your 100 highest-pp plays in osu!. Only top plays count toward your profile pp — anything outside your top 100 is invisible to the rating system. To gain pp, you have to set a play that's better than at least one current top play, pushing the displaced one off the list. TrackMyOsu watches your top 100 in real time and flags every new entry with the pp it added.
How a play becomes a top play
A play's pp value is set by the osu! servers when the play is submitted. If that pp value is higher than your current 100th-best play, it joins your top 100 and pushes the previous 100th out.
Why you can lose a top play without playing badly
If you re-play a map and beat your old score on it, the new score replaces the old one in your top plays — you don't keep both. This is by design: top plays are unique per beatmap.
