Grades (SS, S, A, B, C, D)
osu! awards a letter grade for every passed play: SS (silver SS with Hidden or Flashlight), S (silver S with HD/FL), A, B, C, or D. The grade is determined by your accuracy on that play and the number of 50s and misses, with thresholds that vary by game mode. SS means a perfect all-300 play (no 100s, no 50s, no misses); S means very high accuracy with no misses; the lower grades step down from there.
Why grades matter
Grade counts (your total SS / S / A across all ranked plays) appear on your profile. They're a measure of consistency — how often you finish a map cleanly, separate from how hard those maps were.
